Vacuum-energy devices: what got funded, and what the labs themselves report

What is being claimed
Two institutional events drove a month of videos: Casimir Inc., the company founded by former NASA researcher Harold 'Sonny' White, announced a US Space Force SpaceWERX STTR Phase I contract on 25 August 2026 for a solid-state generator said to draw persistent power from the quantum vacuum, and the channel relayed a 70 watts-per-square-metre figure for Garret Moddel's Casimir-cavity diodes. Both were presented as vindication of the free-energy thesis. In the same weeks, engineers who actually build these devices spoke on the record: ZPF Technologies told the July APEC conference that its novel 'participation' term reduces to the standard cavity-QED Purcell factor and that its early force estimates failed a thermodynamic screen and were withdrawn; Charles Chase (ex-Lockheed Skunk Works, now the UnLab) said Moddel's currents are tiny and may be a solid-state chemical potential, retracted his own cantilever result as deposition stress, and stated that nothing in the field has been independently replicated. On 1 September the channel accepted, on air, Chase's statement that the Casimir effect does not by itself establish zero-point fluctuations — the Jaffe (2005) point this site's critics page has made since launch — and Chase's own null cantilever result. In the Valone interview the guest rejected the idea that zero-point energy is a classified subject and gave a null-leaning verdict on Hathaway's replications. In the 22 August watch-party the channel said plainly that every free-energy chip discussed — Moddel's, Thibado's, White's — could fail and none is guaranteed.
Our assessment
The funding is real and dated: a Phase I STTR is a feasibility study, and Casimir Inc. also held a $274,920 NSF SBIR Phase I in 2024. Neither award is a measurement, and neither changes the physics tier. The 70 W/m² number comes from an unnamed narrator in a promotional clip; Moddel's own published assessment (with Dmitriyeva, 2019) remains cautious, and the proponent-side testimony in this window points the other way. Chapter 6's position stands: dynamical-Casimir photon production is Definitive, net usable power from the vacuum is Contested, and the most informative new evidence is a negative result reported by the people trying hardest to get a positive one. We have added the SpaceWERX award, the NSF award, and the APEC self-report to the chapter's funding-and-status ledger. One correction the site will not inherit: the 1 September thesis reads a propulsion chart's 'infinite specific impulse' as 'free energy'. Specific impulse is infinite by definition for anything that carries no propellant, including a device producing zero thrust; it says nothing about energy. A second, from the same interviews: the hydrogen-atom-stability argument ('atoms are perpetual-motion machines unless the vacuum feeds them') is the corpus's most-repeated proof, and it is the one standard quantum mechanics answers without any vacuum term — the ground state is stationary because it is an energy eigenstate. We have tiered that argument down, not up. And in the very clip used on 23 July as proof that Ken Shoulders' charge clusters release more energy than they cost, Harold Puthoff says the vacuum-energy effort has been unsuccessful so far. One category error to keep separate: Paul Thibado's graphene circuit (Phys. Rev. E, 2020), often listed beside the Casimir devices, harvests thermal ripples at room temperature and its authors state it moves no net heat; it is Brownian energy harvesting, not zero-point energy. The channel also made a dated prediction on 20 July: that all three funded chip programmes — Thibado's, Moddel's, and White's — will work. That is a genuine falsifier and Chapter 6 adopts it as such. The Garry Nolan clip played on 16 July states both halves of the case in one breath: a cubic centimetre of vacuum holds enough energy to wreck the planet, and it is all tightly bound. The second half is the objection. Three of the uploads in this theme are re-cuts or re-uploads of material already counted — Gabriel Dias's re-upload of the channel's reaction to his own talk, Alt Propulsion's re-cut of the Chase interview, and a forty-second clip restating the Casimir-battery claim. Each is logged as the same data point, not as corroboration.
What would prove it wrong: A Casimir-cavity or MicroSparc device delivering sustained electrical power above its own losses, measured calorimetrically by an independent laboratory with the source-of-energy question closed, would move this to Strong. A published null from Casimir Inc.'s Phase I would settle it the other way for that design.
Strongest objection · Standard thermodynamics; Jaffe (2005)
A Phase I award is issued on the strength of a proposal, not a demonstration; the Casimir force is derivable without any zero-point energy at all (Jaffe 2005), so a 'vacuum power' chip has to show a closed energy ledger including its own actuation before a single watt can be attributed to the vacuum.
