Yoshiaki Takahashi's 1999 United States patent is a brushless electric motor with two additions. 1. A switched motor is a sequence of attractions

Every brushless motor turns by timing. A rotor pole approaches a stator coil; the coil is switched on so its iron core pulls the pole toward it; just as the pole arrives the coil is switched off, so it does not hold the pole back as it leaves; the next coil round is switched on to pull it onward. In this patent a Hall-effect sensor at each coil reports where the pole is and a transistor does the switching. The skill is entirely in when a coil turns on and off.

2. Two additions

Takahashi adds a very strong flat magnet, built as two layers of different alloys, inside the base of each rotor pole, and optionally inside each stator core. And he winds a second coil beside every field coil. The field coils drive the rotor; the second coils generate, because every pole that sweeps past them changes the magnetic flux through them. A capacitor across a generating coil tunes it, so it delivers power well at low speed.
