DIRD Warp Drive Dark energy and the Manipulation of Extra Dimensions

Richard K. Obousy · DIA / AAWSAP contractor

In one minute

This is the warp-drive paper the Defense Intelligence Agency commissioned for its Advanced Aerospace Weapon System Applications programme, and it does something earlier warp work had not: it says where the bubble would come from. The report starts from Alcubierre’s 1994 metric, in which space contracts ahead of a craft and expands behind it, and shows that treated as general relativity alone the negative energy needed is astronomical — about −3.03 × 10⁵⁰ joules for a fifty-metre bubble at light speed. Their move is to treat the problem as quantum field theory instead. Casimir energy, the measured force that appears when boundaries reshape the vacuum, also depends on the size of any extra spatial dimension — as the inverse fourth power of its radius. Sum the Standard Model’s contributions in five dimensions, add one exotic field, and the vacuum settles into a stable minimum whose value is the dark energy we observe. Adjust that radius locally, the authors argue, and you adjust the expansion of space around the craft — for roughly a hundred million times less energy.

Connection

Chapter 4 treats propulsion as engineering the metric rather than pushing on propellant, and this is the intelligence community’s own statement of that programme: the quantum vacuum of chapter 2, dark energy, and the warp bubble are one subject, with a named mechanism, an order-of-magnitude energy budget and a proposed first experiment.

From the source

  1. Warp drive spacetimes of the Alcubierre type require exotic matter — negative energy density or negative stress-tension — and violate the classical energy conditions for arbitrarily low bubble speeds, not only superluminal ones; a fifty-metre bubble with a millimetre wall needs about −3.03 × 10⁵⁰ joules to reach light speed.Section 2.1; Equation (2.3); Table 2

  2. The Casimir effect is a real macroscopic force produced by a modification of the quantum vacuum rather than by any of the four fundamental forces, and atomic-force-microscope experiments have verified the theoretical prediction to within 1 percent.Section 4.1; References 24 and 25

  3. Summing the vacuum contributions of every Standard Model field across three large dimensions and one compact fifth dimension, with the addition of a single exotic field confined to the fifth dimension, produces a stable minimum in the vacuum energy density — a solution to modulus stabilisation — that can be tuned to the measured value of the cosmological constant.Section 6; Section 7.3; Figure 7

  4. The magnitude of the higher-dimensional Casimir energy varies as the inverse fourth power of the extra dimension’s radius, so very small changes in that radius produce dramatic changes in the local vacuum energy density; a technology able to adjust the radius locally would thereby acquire direct control over the local dark energy density and so over the expansion and contraction of space.Section 7; Section 7.4; Equations (7.1)–(7.3)

  5. A warp bubble can be generated by creating false vacuum minima around the craft — a de Sitter minimum at the rear and an anti-de Sitter minimum at the front — and this dimensional paradigm cuts the negative energy requirement by a factor of about 10⁸ relative to Lobo and Visser, to roughly −1.00 × 10⁴² joules at light speed for a bubble enclosing 100 cubic metres, with a thin shell reducing it further.Section 7.3; Section 7.4; Figures 8 and 9; Table 3

  6. A device whose energy output had w less than −1 would produce a local expansion of space of order 10⁻⁵ metres per second for every metre the beam travels, which is measurable on a table top; and the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider can probe ADD-type extra dimensions up to about 8 TeV and universal extra dimensions to about 3 TeV, opening the possibility that the size of the extra dimensions may be controlled at accelerator energies.Section 7.5; Section 7.6
