The plasmoid lifetime ladder

University, using machines that already exist. · 2 min czytania

Co proponuje

Laboratory plasmoids are millimetre-scale and last nanoseconds to microseconds. The objects this site is interested in are metres wide and persist for minutes. Nobody has ever published a ladder — a systematic study of what actually sets plasmoid lifetime across the architectures that make them. Building that ladder is a whole research programme and it does not require inventing anything: every rung already exists in somebody's laboratory.

Why the library suggests it

At the short end, a Caltech group discharges a capacitor between twin electrodes to make a braided arched plasma loop about twenty centimetres long that lives for roughly ten microseconds, films it at ten million frames a second, and catches the moment one strand pinches down to kinetic scale — a several-kilovolt voltage spike and a burst of X-rays at 7.6 kiloelectronvolts out of a plasma otherwise only a couple of electronvolts hot (Generation of laboratory nanoflares from multiple braided plasma loops, 2023). In the middle sit the dense-plasma-focus plasmoids — tens of microns across, holding a large share of the machine's whole energy (Focus Fusion, 2023) — and the sheared-flow Z pinch, where a column stays quiet for about sixteen microseconds, roughly five thousand times as long as it should (Sustained Neutron Production from a Sheared-Flow Stabilized Z Pinch, 2019). At the long end sits the spheromak, a ring of plasma that makes almost its own entire magnetic cage from currents flowing inside itself (The spheromak confinement device, 2005). Each of those is a different answer to the same question, and nobody has put them on one axis.

The experiment or build

This is a measurement programme rather than a new device. Define one figure of merit — lifetime divided by the natural instability time for that geometry — and measure it consistently across a braided loop, a plasma-focus pinch, a sheared-flow pinch and a spheromak, with the same diagnostics and the same definition of "alive". Then vary the parameter each architecture claims is doing the confining. The settling measurement is lifetime in units of the natural instability time, plotted against the confinement parameter each architecture proposes, on one chart across four machine types. That chart tells you which mechanism actually buys lifetime, and it is the honest starting point for any question about objects that persist for minutes.

Na jakim jest etapie

Published and peer-reviewed for every individual rung; the comparison across rungs has never been made, which is why it is worth making.
