F. E. Gordon and H. J. Whitehouse describe the Lattice Energy Converter as a gaseous electronic device in which a hydrogen-loaded host material ionises the surrounding gas spontaneously and continuously, without radioactive materials. The physical process and nature of the ionisation are currently unknown. With electrodes of different work functions, the ionised gas forms a cell that produces a measurable contact potential difference voltage on its own. The cell is a new ion-diffusion-driven device that self-starts and sustains current and voltage without radioactive materials or electrochemical reactions. The same principle extends to solid, gel and liquid electrolytes, where hydrogen-loaded host material enhances performance, forming a new class of direct energy converters.
