Tadahiko Mizuno and Jed Rothwell place a cleaned nickel mesh inside a stainless-steel reactor, degas it by heating and vacuum, and bombard it with electrons and ions to strip surface impurities. This yielded excess heat equal to the heating power applied to the reactor, measured by air-flow calorimetry. An unexpected signal in the control reactor led to a key finding: suitably treated stainless steel alone can produce excess heat under certain conditions. Tests with four sample and reactor types included a straight stainless tube reactor with no discharge treatment that still produced excess heat. Even a simple stainless reactor with suitable surface treatment exceeds its input, and the excess heat rises exponentially with temperature.
