Peter Hagelstein gives an overview of his models for excess heat in the Fleischmann-Pons experiment. More than two decades after the effect was announced, he reviews the approaches pursued in search of a coherent theoretical explanation. The effect is prodigious and helium-4 appears correlated with the energy, yet energetic particles matching that energy are absent. That led him to models that split a large energy quantum into many small ones, which the lossy spin-boson model appears to achieve. Coherent energy exchange in that limit, together with excitation transfer, describes a new set of reactions relevant to the experiments. The resulting models give interpretations for numerous experimental observations that textbook nuclear and condensed matter physics do not explain.
