In one minute
Masahiro Hotta proposes a protocol that extracts energy from local vacuum states of quantum fields by using the information from a quantum measurement. Alice excites the field's ground state with a local measurement, and the resulting wavepackets travel away without Bob, stationed elsewhere, capturing their energy. Alice then sends her result to Bob classically, and his local operation chosen by that result releases positive energy from the field into his apparatus. Negative-energy wavepackets appear around Bob and then chase Alice's positive-energy wavepackets, forming loosely bound states. Energy is extracted even where the field holds no quantum energy on average, and a two-valued measurement is analysed in detail for a massless scalar field in 1+1 dimensions.
