Allocca and colleagues describe a room-temperature beam balance that prototypes the cryogenic balance of the Archimedes experiment, which aims to measure how electromagnetic vacuum fluctuations interact with gravity. It has a 50 cm aluminium arm carrying a 0.2 kg aluminium sample and a lead counterweight, with interferometric closed-loop readout in the low-seismic-noise SAR-GRAV laboratory in Sardinia. Torque sensitivity reaches about 7 × 10^-13 N m per root hertz at tens of millihertz. Matching the thermal noise estimate, this confirms the optical and mechanical design and clears the way to the final balance. Because weight and counterweight are different materials, the balance also senses B-L dark photons, and a first short run gave encouraging constraints.
