Masahiro Hotta, Jiro Matsumoto and Go Yusa work on quantum energy teleportation, which moves usable energy between distant parties using only local operations and classical communication. The protocol connects to black hole physics, the quantum theory of Maxwell's demon and entanglement in condensed matter. In earlier versions the extractable energy fell off inversely with the distance between sender and receiver. They prove that placing a squeezed vacuum state, with local vacuum regions, between the two users removes that limit and allows energy teleportation over practical distances. A realistic test has been proposed using the edge currents of quantum Hall systems.
