McMonigal, Lewis and O'Byrne study the Alcubierre warp drive, which moves a ship at any global velocity by deforming spacetime in a bubble around it. They trace how light and massive particles, with starting speeds anywhere from −c to c, interact with bubbles moving below and above light speed at constant and changing velocity. Particles moving the same way as the ship gain extremely high energy and become time locked, experiencing very little proper time inside the bubble. An accelerating bubble boosts particles moving toward its front and slows those moving toward its rear, while matter at rest with the bubble is unaffected. The size of the boost scales with the bubble's acceleration.
