Forsley sets two solid-state fusion efforts side by side, noting that both NASA and Google have explored and funded low energy nuclear reactions. NASA has funded efforts since 1989, and Google Research began in 2014. Google and the researchers it funded published in Nature, Nature Communications and the Journal of Applied Physics, while the Physical Review C papers led to a commercialized neutron generator built by Astral Systems in the UK. Those separate efforts, unknown to the researchers at the time, provided the impetus for the ARPA-E programme and then a DARPA programme. He highlights a reported finite yield floor in the deuterium fusion yield below about 2 keV in metallic hydrides, observed reproducibly in both palladium and titanium hosts.
