Berlinguette and colleagues ask whether electrochemically loading a metal lattice with deuterium can raise the probability of fusion events. Fuel density matters under the Lawson criterion, and a solid metal easily holds deuterium at 10^28 m^-3. They built a benchtop reactor that fires deuterium ions into a palladium target, where deuterium-deuterium fusion takes place inside the metal. Loading extra deuterium into the palladium electrochemically, during the run, raised fusion rates by 15(2)%. The experiment shows chemistry at the electronvolt scale changing nuclear reactions at the megaelectronvolt scale, a new handle on fusion that needs no extreme environment.
