Look for somebody else's warp drive

Co proponuje

If a warp shell is built from real stress-energy and moves through the galaxy, it radiates. That means the question "has anyone built one" is an observational question with named telescopes and existing archives, not a philosophical one. This is the cheapest genuinely new experiment in this section, because the data already exists and nobody has looked through it for this signature.

Why the library suggests it

Erik Lentz and Ryan Felton compute first estimates for what a moving positive energy warp bubble emits — gravitational waves from an oscillating source, radio and optical light from the charges carrying it, and a scattered spray of interstellar photons, gas and neutrinos swept up along the way — and identify one signature no known natural process makes: a craft outrunning its own emissions appears twice at once, one image running forward through the journey and one running backward, separated on the sky. They set out the programme that would turn the sketches into a search: full non-linear simulations across acceleration, coast and deceleration, then a hunt through the Keck, Green Bank and European Southern Observatory archives around stars with a confirmed planet (Motivating Emissions from Positive Energy Warp Bubbles, 2024). A companion paper works the detection question from the metric side (Modifications to The Alcubierre Warp Field Metric in Anisotropic Matter and Implications to Detection, 2024). The methodological standard for this kind of search — instruments specified in advance, categories declared before the data arrives, everything published — is set out in Overview of the Galileo Project (2023).

The experiment or build

Stage one is simulation: extend the emission estimates across a realistic flight profile so the predicted spectrum and the predicted double-image separation become numbers rather than orders of magnitude. Stage two is archive work — a pipeline over public survey data looking for the paired-image signature around planet-hosting stars. The settling measurement is an upper limit: the number of warp-signature events per star per year, at a stated sensitivity, across a stated sample. A published null with a real bound is a genuine scientific result and it would be the first quantitative one this question has ever had.

Na jakim jest etapie

Designed, not yet built — the emission calculation is published as a full proposal with named archives, and the search has not been run.

It is also the card with the lowest barrier to entry of anything in section 3: the telescopes have already taken the data.
