Bernard Haisch
Astrophysicist and coauthor of electromagnetic zero-point-field models of inertia
Haisch, Alfonso Rueda and Harold Puthoff propose that interactions between matter and the electromagnetic zero-point field contribute to inertia. Their later studies explore accelerated reference frames, gravity and possible resonances within that model. With Garret Moddel, Haisch also patented a proposed vacuum-energy extraction arrangement using Casimir cavities.

Inertia as a zero-point-field Lorentz force

Haisch, Rueda and Puthoff propose that inertia, the resistance of matter to acceleration, arises from interactions with electromagnetic vacuum fluctuations. Their 1994 model represents matter through hypothetical charged constituents that oscillate like tiny springs. They calculate the magnetic part of the Lorentz force on these constituents during constant proper acceleration (measured in the particle’s momentary rest frame), averaging over the fluctuating field. The resulting force is proportional to acceleration, with its proportionality coefficient interpreted as inertial mass. Its magnitude depends on an unspecified internal mass and a high-frequency interaction limit set by the constituents’ assumed Planck-scale size. This limit restricts the response of matter, not the vacuum spectrum itself. In the final force expression, the authors select the sign that opposes acceleration, consistent with the resistance they seek to explain.

Haisch, Rueda and Puthoff’s 1997 overview explores whether a fluctuating electromagnetic background could explain inertia, the resistance of matter to acceleration. They describe a model in which charged constituents oscillate in this background and experience a force opposing acceleration. The inferred mass depends on an oscillation damping constant and an interaction frequency limit; replacing that limit with a particle resonance is proposed as a refinement. Their gravity extension uses secondary fields from these oscillations, but still needs a fully relativistic treatment. The approach then covers photons rather than the weak and strong interactions. As a possible test, they propose looking for energy growth of about 1 keV per second in individual antiprotons in an ideal collision-free trap, detected through annihilation at its walls.

Quantum vacuum energy extraction

Haisch and Moddel’s 2008 patent proposes extracting energy by repeatedly moving gas through Casimir cavities, tiny regions that restrict the electromagnetic waves they can support. In the proposed cycle, atoms release energy as they enter a cavity and regain it from the surrounding vacuum field after leaving. The designs collect the released radiation as heat and use flowing gas, vibrating gas, or changing cavity walls to repeat the cycle. The mechanism assumes a balance between electron radiation and absorption from the vacuum; its extension beyond hydrogen is not theoretically established in the patent. An asymmetric design adds an absorbing layer near the entrance but not the exit, aiming to collect energy locally while replenishing it from the wider surroundings.
