The real moving boundary versus the electrical one

Qué propone

Settle an open disagreement between two people building vacuum-energy hardware. One argues that every existing dynamical Casimir experiment cheats — the boundary is moved electronically, never physically — and wants to move real walls along a tapered cavity so that different sections carry different mode counts and the device has a time structure built into its shape. The other argues that moving parts buy you friction and failure modes for nothing, and that the same effect should be reached virtually, through charge, a plasma boundary, or by reversing the Casimir effect electromagnetically. Both are testable. Build both and measure the photon yield per unit of drive energy.

Why the library suggests it

The effect itself is not in question. A boundary modulated fast enough turns the vacuum's fluctuations into real, countable photons, measured first at Chalmers with a superconducting transmission line ended by a SQUID, modulated at about eleven billion times a second so the boundary behaves like a mirror moving at a few per cent of light speed, with two-mode squeezing confirming the quantum origin (Observation of the Dynamical Casimir Effect in a Superconducting Circuit, 2011). A second group reproduced it in a different circuit — a seven-millimetre waveguide holding 250 SQUIDs, driven at twice its resonance, emitting photon pairs whose frequencies sum to the drive (Dynamical Casimir effect in a Josephson metamaterial, 2013). And Viktor Dodonov, who named the effect, states plainly in his fiftieth-anniversary review that the measurement still outstanding is the one with real moving boundaries (Fifty Years of the Dynamical Casimir Effect, 2020).

The experiment or build

Two rigs, one figure of merit. Rig one: a mechanically driven tapered cavity — a piezo-driven or magnetically driven wall running along a section whose cross-section changes, so the mode count changes as the wall travels. Rig two: the same cavity with the wall replaced by a modulated plasma sheath or a switched superconducting film, so the boundary moves without anything moving. The settling measurement is photons out per joule of drive energy in, for each rig, at matched effective boundary velocity — plus the two-mode squeezing signature that separates real vacuum photons from amplified heat. Dodonov's review names the mechanical version as the field's outstanding measurement, so a null from rig one is a publishable result in its own right.
