Why did the United States Navy patent a spaceship?

Starting in 2016, the Navy filed patents that read like a comic book. One described a craft that flies by cutting its own inertia. Others described a room-temperature superconductor and a machine that makes gravitational waves.

The inventor was a real Navy scientist named Salvatore Pais. The documents are real. Anyone can look them up. So what do they actually prove?

What we know for sure

The documents are solid ground, so start there. One patent was granted in December 2018. It describes a craft that cuts its own inertia. Another was granted in June 2019. That one describes a machine for making gravitational waves.

Then something unusual happened. A patent examiner pushed back, as examiners do. So Dr. James Sheehy stepped in. He was the Chief Technology Officer of the Naval Aviation Enterprise, a senior job indeed.

Sheehy wrote to the patent office and said the invention was operable. That means he was saying it works. Reporters later obtained his letters using a public records law. Anyone can read them now.

What scientists are testing right now

The claim itself is bold and specific. Take an electrically charged object. Spin it and shake it hard enough, and you begin pushing on the vacuum itself.

There is a known number for what that would take. Unsettling empty space needs a huge electric field. About a billion billion volts across a single meter. That number is enormous. Every design gets measured against it.

In August 2026 Salvatore Pais spoke about the work in public. It is the most useful thing anyone has added. The Navy did build the machine and test it. But the charge it reached was tiny. It came in about eight orders of magnitude below the patent's own number. That is a gap of a hundred million.

So nobody expected the machine to show anything, and it did not. The real experiment has not been run yet. Physicists asked by reporters spent two years looking. They found no basis for the effect in the physics we know.

So this one stays open. The honest way to close it is a careful test. Run it at the conditions the patent names, and say so beforehand.

Why it matters

Reading documents carefully is a genuine superpower. Patents, letters and reports each tell you something different. Mixing them up is how people end up certain about things nobody has measured.

And if this effect turned out to be real, everything in this book would change.

You need: Paper, a pencil, and a tape measure if you have one

  2. 2.Under it write that number times ten. Then times ten again, for eight lines in all.
  3. 3.Beside each line, write something in the world that is roughly that size.

Notice: By line four you are taller than a mountain. By line eight you have left the planet behind. Every step was only times ten. Eight of those steps is a gap of a hundred million, and that is the gap this chapter is about.
